Workforce Investment Act Youth Program
The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Program is designed for in-school youth that are ages 14-18, economically disadvantaged, and determined deficient in basic skills. The purpose of the Youth Academy is to assist youth in achieving greater academic success and preparation for the workplace by providing academic sessions, life skills training, and a summer work experience.
The objectives of the program are to (1) improve the
participant's academic standing, (2) help participants
remain in school, and (3) enhance the chances for a
successful transition from school to unsubsidized employment
or post-secondary education or training.
The program incorporates after-school academic sessions,
augmented skill training opportunities (which includes
leadership and life skills), intensive case management,
supportive services, and follow-up services. All interested
youth are tested for eligibility before acceptance in
the program
